When people from Western Møn went to Stege with commodities, they had to cross a bridge to get through the castle and then again over a second bridge to get into town. Before the feudal position ended in 1663, they also had to go through the home farm as their goods were to be inspected and examined by the castle ward and his officers. This occurred because the goods first and foremost had to be offered to the castellan of the castle. Only what he would not buy was then transported to the market in town.

This warehouse was built in 1855 by merchant Anton Wulff. Back then, the merchant’s house consisted of the land from Storegade 18 to Søndersti 2 (the warehouse). It is a typical example of the extensions of the long, narrow plots that exist in almost the entire town within the embankment. In 1936, the warehouse was classified as an independent property and today it houses beautiful, classic apartments.

In the years 1976-77 and again in 2000 archaeological excavations revealed remains of a significant castle construction. The original castle, which was supposedly made of wood, was probably built during Valdemar II – Valdemar the Conqueror (ruling in the early 1200s) - perhaps by Jakob Sunesøn who ruled Møn as his personal estate from 1225 until his death in 1246.

This distinctive building with its prominent position on the waterfront was built in 1848 by N.S. Nebelong as a custom’s house. However, this was closed in 1970, and in 1991, Møn’s Tourist Office moved in and gained a fine position in these historic settings - now one of the first sights our visitors get acquainted with in Stege. The place is now called ‘House of Møn’ and functions as a centre for local development projects as well as still being the tourist information centre, helping our guests find good experiences in Møn and South Zealand.
